It doesn’t make the powdery soft ice. But if I had to rate it 1-10 on ice fluffiness, I’d give it a 6.5
Note that the softer you press on the ice feed handle the finer the snow chips are. Also real Hawaiian shaved ice syrups are better than the others including the Icee syrup.
It spend the few extra dollars and get the 4 blade machine makes a big difference just wish they would offer a cover
IYKYK
Bought a Kool-aid snow cone maker at Walmart for $20. Cones, syrup out the door for $40. Kids was happy, it made chipped ice that tasted like Kool-aid and didn't actually absorb the syrup.
I was not pleased. Took 2mins to make 1 cone.
I bought this machine and a variety pack of snow cone syrup. Wife wasn't happy at all. $100 for snow Cones wasn't her idea of a good use of money.
Used this machine for the 1st time, it makes snow. Let me be clear here... It makes perfectly fluffy amazing awesome incredible snow like for the perfect snow Cones on earth. Wife is happy now. Made 5 snow Cones in 1 min. Now looking forward to being the cool house that has snow Cones. Highly recommend it.
It leaves small pieces of ice inside that will melt and end up on your counter, What I did was use an old Rubber mat with a dish towel laid over it, I am sure to put the bowl in place after I use it and it keeps things tidy. I empty the bowl when I go to use it again. This thing has been great all summer! I might put it away for the winter. 🤔 Then again, I just don’t know, maybe not.
If I had to buy this again, I would try the 4 blade, I wish the just sell the 4 blade shaver, I think the motors are the same.
Just put the ice in the hopper, close the hopper turn it on keeping light pressure on the handle and in seconds its shaved ice instead of cubes.
Fantastic.
Since I have very little patience, the fact I'm impressed with the speed is really saying something.
Ice is fluffy like snow cone ice.
Very close to the texture of real snow.
Worth the price, its way better than the slow plastic thing I bought first. And its not going to break because its made of brittle plastic.(the plastic one had the activator tab break off making it useless)
This has a real on and off switch that is covered with a soft clear button cover to keep melted ice out of the electronics should you spill.
WORKS: I have the 2 blade model and it just ate through a bin of big ice cubes. It spit out fluffy shaved ice as fast as I could press the hopper.
The only maybe downside is it can be as loud as a blender. And if you didn't see that coming...
Pro:
* Price
* Size - it is small enough to pack on the RV for summer camp outs
* Shaves ice quickly
* Can use any type of ice. This means I do not have to pre-freeze enough perfectly shaped ice tubs to use it
* In addition to great Snow Cones, we use the ice in all types of drinks. The shaved ice could also be used for creating a beautiful way of serving foods such as Shrimp Cocktails.
Cons:
* Small pieces of ice do fall through that make it more Snow Cone quality than Hawaiian Ice.
* It leaks water from around the joint and there is no way to catch it - see video. So you have to set the machine on a towel to catch the water from the melting ice.
Conclusion:
Despite the 2 cons, we use it daily and would buy again.
I use small square ice cubes straight from our ice dispenser and have no issues.
I also did research prior to choosing this model and based it on durability, longevity and ice consistency.
I would not recommend you run frozen fruit through it, simply because you cannot take it apart enough to really clean afterwards.
I use it with and without adding syrup. My family enjoys the syrup with sugar, I opt for sugar free. Don't go with the cheap syrups made for kids snow cones, you will get more flavor for less money by using quality syrups. I get regular and sugar free from Torani, and sugar free from Jordan's Skinny Syrups. Amazing flavor and you use less to get a good ice. Another helpful hint is don't refrigerate your syrups, they tend to make the ice clump up when poured on.
Not as noisy as we expected from the reviews.
You need to help move the bowl around to catch the ice but it's no big deal.
Great for the price and beyond expectations of how fast and beautifully the ice comes out.
We filled the hopper with almost a quart jar of store bought ice and made 2, 16 ounce sno cones. We love it! Can't wait for summer evenings on the patio.
This appliance is the PERFECT solution for making shaved ice for beverages!! The shaved ice comes out in the perfect consistency and the appliance is EASY and SAFE to use.
As other have stated, use a block of ice instead of ice cubes for best results. You can make ice blocks many different ways just make sure the size of the ice block can fit completely inside the mouth of the shaver because this appliance has a safety feature that doesn't allow the device to start shaving until the lid is sufficiently closed.
The way I make mine is by throwing 1.5 liter bottle waters in the freezer and use a knife to chop them in threes once they're frozen. I first score the plastic around the bottle, where I want to cut the ice, and then lightly chop the bottle (like an axe against a tree trunk) to safely and slowly crack the ice. This works perfectly because the sides of the water bottle hold the ice in place making the perfect crack. I then cut the knife through the crack to completely separate the bottle into perfect sized chunks. These can be stored in the freezer until they are ready to use. Remove the plastic and whalla! You have a perfect ice block ready for shaving!
One last thing to mention is the build quality of this thing is incredible and feels industrial strength. I've had mine for 8 months and use it a couple times a month. It is super sturdy and feels like a device that will last for years.
Relatively quiet, I was expecting it to be louder.
Safety feature: blade will not rotate unless lid is closed, so fingers are safe.
Shaves fast, falls right into bowl.
You will get a little water afterwards at the bottom of the machine,
so just put a washcloth there.
We have a small counter space and it does not take up that much room.
Previously we were using a plastic hand crank shaver, boy what a difference!
A couple of things to note:
- A common problem with machines of this configuration is the catch basin. A small amount of ice bits will end up on your counter. I really don't understand the design at all; they could have designed it with the intention of placing a large cup underneath it in such a way as to catch all the ice, but the way it's set up, that's not easy to do.
- Since it's all metal, you don't get problems with plastic flavor in your ice that others have reported on other machines. It's hefty and feels quite sturdy.
We think this machine is great and I'd get it again. I looked at a fair number of competing products and still feel like this is the best of the lot. If you make frozen drinks, get this - you won't be disappointed!
Since I bought gallon chugs of flavoring. (I take my slushie eating very seriously) I found it difficult to pour from the chug so I cleaned and old ketchup bottle and poured the flavoring into it. Works great with the no mess caps. I also place the flavoring in the fridge it melts the ice less when adding the flavoring.
The favorite in our house are the pickle snow cones with chopped up pickles and pickle juice. I use a juicer to make real authentic pickle juice, the #1 favorite in our home.
There are two negatives of this ice shaver.
(1) First, it is very loud. Fortunately, it is so fast that you don’t have to worry about how loud it is for very long. My kitties were scared at first. But now they completely ignore all the noise.
(2) Second, it can be a little bit messy. The shaved ice always seems to splatter towards the right side of the icemaker. This is easily solved however. I simply put a paper towel leaning up against the right side and extending a little bit out. This catches all of the ice that comes flying out of the shaver.
I was surprised at how inexpensive it was for the purpose for which I mentioned above. Great value and it's super sturdy. We've actually been using it daily at home all summer long to keep cool and it's kept on going.
The only issue we've had is the ice getting in the little plate. Put a towel down on the counter first. There's overspray and the plate fills quickly. I've placed ours on top of a large stainless steel bowl and it works well. That's what the carnival style is anyway, and I now understand why! Great value and price. I recommend the buy.
Caution: the motor turns on automatically when you put the lid down, so make sure the lid is open (up) when you plug it in and turn on the power. Also, dry the machine with a paper towel or dish cloth when you finish using it to prevent rust and prevent potential bacteria from growing inside.
I don’t use the circular metal bowl that came with the machine. It seemed like it took too many steps to fill up the circular bowl with snow and then have to scoop the snow out into a cup, which is a challenge without some kind of special scoop. Instead, I put a 16 oz plastic Solo cup against the opening where the snow comes out and it fills the cup with snow in one step.
Also, the place where you load the ice cubes is large enough to hold a full Solo cup of ice, and that amount fills the cup to the top with snow. So, one 16 oz cup of ice equals 16 oz of snow.
With summer in full force now, I use this machine every day. I look forward to coming home from work and making my favorite blue raspberry snow cone.
Update: February 12, 2022 This ice crusher is still working like the day I bought it. The blade appears to still be sharp and everything works perfectly! Great investment!
The price is excellent especially for a machine that sturdy and powerful As machines bigger and more money. I will be bringing it to friends houses this summer to share. They will probably end up buying one too.
I use mine very day. You can't believe how tasty a Diet Coke slush is.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK:
This requires removing the two small phillips screws that hold in the safety switch, and, underneath that, a phillips screw that holds the ice chute to the front of the device. On the underside of the chute, there is a allen screw (4mm) that you remove, and then the chute pulls off.
Next, there are two allen head screws that secure the blade, loosen these screws and push the blade forward so it protrudes more. This will allow the machine to create larger chunks of ice. Tighten up the screws and re-assemble the machine (be sure you position the safety switch correctly so it will allow the machine to turn on when the handle is lowered).
In addition to creating the more chip-like ice, this also had the effect of making a much larger mess as the ice is exiting from the machine, so be ready.
I have only used it one time since performing this modification, but I'm happy with the results. However, I have yet to see if this creates problems with the motor, blade, or general safety of the equipment.
Edit/Update: After about a year's worth of use, the machine is still working great, and I'm very happy with it. However, I did have a problem where I got "greedy" and tried to adjust the ice cutting blade further out than I did the first time. This worked OK a few times, and then the blade "slipped". It was not a catastrophic failure, but the blade moved outward (due to centrifugal force) and started to score the inside of the aluminum cover. Upon reflection the operation was slightly louder when this was happening.
I ended up with a mouthful of aluminum shavings mixed with my ice, not good. I moved the blade back into the lightly extended position and also used some blue loctite on the retaining screws' threads. This was about 6 months ago, and I have not had a problem since.
One note, I wipe down the machine with a cloth after each use, but there still has been a slight buildup of "muck" in the hinged area of the handle. I occasionally use a chopstick and the cleaning cloth to swab it out. Also, the unit will slowly leak water even with a wipe down, so keep a rag under it or store it in a place that is not effected by water.
And finally, I used a Dremel to cut off the front end of the machine, added two clamps on opposite sides of the ejection port and have it dispense ice into a ziplock bag. This seems to work much better than the "tray" that comes with the unit.
